Natalie Schmidt is an interdisciplinary artist based in Vancouver, B.C., on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. She was born and raised in Merritt, B.C., on the unceded territory of the Nlaka'pamux and Syilx people. She holds a BFA (2017) in painting from Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECUAD). Her practice explores the intersections between painting and textiles. Schmidt’s work makes reference to techniques of embroidery and garment-making while also existing as dynamic sculptural paintings that engage with architecture and space. Drawing from a broad range of sources such as fairy tale illustrations, craft, and romantic conceptions of nature, her work is composed of whimsically painted arrangements that express dream-like states while engaging with material in a perceptually intriguing way.
